Annexin V marked with fluorescein is used as a fluorescent probe to detect cell apoptosis using a fluorescence microscope or flow cytometry. Propidium Iodide (PI), is a nucleic acid dye which cannot diffuse into normal cells. However, for cells undergoing apoptosis or are already dead, PI can permeate through the cell membrane and dye the nucleus. Therefore, Annexin V matched with PI is used to distinguish cells in different stages of apoptosis.
